15 Traders Killed in Agatu Attacks, Mourning Communities

Fifteen traders were reportedly killed in a wave of new violence in the regional government in the state of Benue, when the armed attacker ambushed the population returning from the local market.

The victims are said to be returning from Oweto Market to their village on Saturday night when armed people surround the route around the Ogwumogbo and Okpo’okpolo community, releasing a deadly attack.

Confirming the incident, former Deputy Chairman of AGATU LGA, John Ikwulono, said the attack made many others injured besides the confirmed death.

“Five victims were killed between Ogbayi and Ogwumogbo, where there was a small stream called Abekoko,” said Ikwulono, added that one of the deceased was identified as Ali from Ogwumogbo, while the other four identities were still unknown.

The current Chairman of the LGA AGATU, Melvin James, reportedly attended the burial of the victims when a reporter tried to contact him. His aide, who answered the call but refused to give his name, confirmed the murder and associated the attack with the suspect of armed shepherd.

Meanwhile, Secretary Macban, Ibrahim Galma, in response to the question from reporters, said, “I do not know any challenges in the area,” added that he would verify before making formal statements. At the time of the press, no further update was received from him.

Police spokesman for the Benue state command, CSP Catherine Anene, also stated that he had not received an official report on the incident.

The latest attack brought the total number of murders reported throughout the benue community between April 1 and May 17, 2025, to at least 174. However, local residents insisted on numbers that could actually be much higher due to incidents that were not reported in remote areas.

Disruptive patterns of violence have been spread in several regions of the local government in recent weeks, including Gwer East, Guma, Oterkpo, Gwer West, Kwande, Apa, Agatu, and Makurdi. Among them, the Sanken-Katsina-ala axis, logo, and ukum-after seeing the deadliest victims, with 83 deaths recorded between 17 and 21 April.
