18 months later, Abdulsalami’s peace committee is open about pressure to cancel the 2023 presidential election.

Former head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, said on Friday that the National Peace Committee (NPC) was being urged to persuade the National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the 2023 presidential election.

Abubakar, who is the NPC Chairman, stated this when delivering the election organizing committee’s report.

The former military rule said the committee was under immense pressure from certain individuals and groups to influence the process.

The Electoral Commission on Friday also rejected claims of discrepancies between election results published on its website and those made by counting officials at the National Counting Centre in Abuja.

The commission made the clarification in a letter dated August 15 and addressed to the Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ).

CCIJ in its latest report said it found several discrepancies in the election results announced by INEC and the results uploaded to INEC Result Viewing (IReV).

The positions of the NPC and INEC reveal intrigues related to the elections.

More than 18 months after the election, Nigerians continue to find fault with the conduct of the election and the results announced by the commission.

The report reads: “As the election day progressed, criticism and counter-criticism mounted. The NPC was already facing a barrage of phone calls and calls for INEC to act. The Peace Committee was inundated with requests to intervene.

“Both the Chairman of the Committee, General Abdulsalami A. Abubakar, the Chairman, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, and the Head of the NPC Secretariat, Father Atta Barkindo, were inundated with calls, requests, and petitions demanding NPC intervention.

“There are several requests asking the KPU to urge the KPU to stop counting the election results because there were many violations and it was not in accordance with the Election Law.

“The other party demands that the principles of the signed Peace Agreement are not being respected and therefore the Committee must call for the complete cancellation of the elections.

“The most important call relates to the 25% threshold for Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory. Some analysts who contacted the committee asked that the final election results should not be announced because the presidential candidate-elect did not score the required 25% as stated in the Electoral Act. If there is, there should be a second round.”
