2,000 Australians left Iran, Israel in the midst of increasing conflict

Around 2,000 Australians have registered for assistance to leave the Middle East.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers told the media on Wednesday that more than 1,000 Australians in Israel and 870 in Iran had registered at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for government assistance to safely leave the region.

Chalmers said the government worked “very close” with citizens through Dat and monitor developments in the Middle East.

“Obviously, our main focus is on human costs from this increased conflict,” he said.

“And our focus, in a direct sense, works with nearly 2,000 Australians who have indicated that they want to get out of a very dangerous and very dangerous part of the world today.”

On Monday, 350 residents in Iran and 300 in Israel have told dfat about their desire to leave.

The Minister of Defense Industry, Pat Conroy, said on Tuesday that the government was preparing plans to evacuate Australians or bring them to commercial flights when the air zone was reopened.
