The Kwankwasiyya Movement has revealed that its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, will be Peter Obi’s deputy in the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to the movement, he would have been received by the new party on Monday, after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The developments were confirmed by Kwankwassiya Movement spokesperson, Dr Habibu Sale Mohammed, in an exclusive interview with The Nation on Saturday.
Mohammed said the decision was made after a stakeholders’ meeting in Kano on Friday.
He said the meeting was attended by members of the NDC and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
He said: “During the meeting, we discussed the litigation surrounding the ADC.
“With only eight days left for the submission of party membership registers to INEC, stakeholders concluded that there was no hope of the ADC surviving the onslaught against it.
“We had to abandon ship.”
Mohammed said key Kwankwasiyya figures have already left the ADC.
He said: “All followers of Kwankwasiyya, including Yusuf Gawuna and Aminu Gwarzo who resigned as Deputy Governor of Kano State, have left the ADC.
“They must follow the leader (Kwankwaso) into whatever political party he turns to.” Political commentary forum
He added that discussions were underway to woo two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, including Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, to the NDC.
He said: “The decision to join the NDC is to avoid the legal trap that could prevent Obi and Kwankwaso from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
“This ensures that Nigerians have a range of candidates to choose from, rather than a single mandatory candidate.
“This time Kwankwaso is open to all negotiations leading to a change of government, with the hope that there will be understanding and support for his sacrifice.”
