2027: No automatic ticket for Peter Obi, says faction of the Labor Party led by Abure-Thage

By Victor Osula, Abuja

A faction of the Labor Party (LP) led by Julius Abure rejected any notion of automatic presidential ticket for Peter Obi in view of the general elections of 2027.

The former governor of Anambra and the presidential candidate of the 2023 of LP have recently announced his intention to seek the appointment of the party again for the presidency of 2027.

However, the Labor Party remains involved in internal disputes, with rival factions led by Julius Abure, Senator Nenadi Usman and Lamidi Apapa who each support a legitimate leadership of the party.

In a declaration issued on Monday, the faction led by Abure, through its secretary of national advertising, Obiorah Ifoh, said that no candidate, including Obi, will receive an automatic ticket.

According to the declaration, the process of appointment of the party is regulated by established rules that exclude automatic applications.

The statement read in part:

“In the first place, although we do not oppose anyone who is trying to contest under the banner of the Labor Party in 2027, it must be clarified that the party has longtime rules as regards the emergency of candidates and automatic tickets are not part of this process.

“Recall that during the National Party of the 2024 party, automatic tickets were erroneously granted to our former presidential candidate and the party governor alone. Since then this decision has been canceled and canceled after an in -depth revision of the party statutes.”

IFOH added: “Secondly, hours after Peter Obi announced his intention to run under the Labor Party, he was spotted in a meeting of a pro-Coalition group in Abuja, without the consent of the party leadership.

“This is disconcerting and suggests that Obi has not yet clarified his position regarding the 2027 presidential competition.

“The party has constantly declared that it will not be committed to any coalition or merger before the 2027 elections. The continuous involvement of OBI with the coalition group is not only unpleasant but unacceptable for the party leadership.

“Mina the party authority and shows clear contempt for the internal processes of the party.”

The faction led by Abure ended by stating that the 2027 Labor party president of the Labor Party remains open to all aspiring who choose to contest in the party rules.
