Hamzat and Sanwo-Olu

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has backed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to succeed him in 2027, describing him as “fit, ready and well prepared” after Hamzat formally declared his ambitions at State House on Monday.

Hamzat showed up with a senior delegation – party leaders, cabinet members, former senators, former ministers and diplomats – to notify the governor of his intention to run.

Sanwo-Olu described it as a “warm family meeting” which ended in unanimous support for the deputy governor.

“We just concluded a visit where the deputy governor came with a strong delegation to formally inform me of his intentions,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“At the end of the consultations, it was unanimous that the lieutenant governor is fit, ready and well prepared.”

The governor relied heavily on Hamzat’s credentials, saying he has been in the administration’s engine room since day one.

“He is a man who deeply understands governance and has been part of the system, knowing how every aspect works,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“He worked with me with humility and at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment and support.”

Sanwo-Olu interpreted the formal notification as a sign of respect and highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s contribution to their political rise.

“I thank our father and leader, the president, who saw the vision years ago and believed in both of us,” he said.

With Tinubu’s blessing and a unified delegation by his side, Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in Hamzat’s chances and urged Lagosians to support his deputy for continuity in 2027.
