President Bola Tinubu said on Thursday that sponsors of planned nationwide protests against bad governance do not love the country.
The President, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said this when a delegation of Islamic leaders led by Sheikh Bala Lau visited him at the State House, Abuja.
A group of Nigerians have planned a nationwide protest titled: “End Bad Governance” starting August 1 to air their grievances over alleged corruption, insecurity and other problems in the country.
Tinubu told his guests that those behind the protests had alternative passports and were holding virtual meetings around the world.
He also dismissed allegations of manipulation by any interest groups in the ongoing economic reforms initiated by his government.

President Tinubu said: “The sponsors of the protests do not love our country. They do not love the nation. They do not understand citizenship. They have alternative passports.
“They are in different parts of the world holding virtual meetings. We do not want to turn Nigeria into Sudan. We are talking about famine, not burial. We must be careful. We must be careful of premature politics; politics of hatred, and anger.
“The Internet allows meetings to be held in artificial environments. They hold meetings and sponsor outrage.
“I have no gang. I have no sponsors. The money I spent on the election was my personal wealth. At one point, the odds were against me; the banks were closed. However, Allah, the Almighty God, said that I would become President. Now, my goal is to follow the guidance and teachings of the Almighty God.
“One of the most powerful elements of defense is a good conscience. It is also a defense against corruption.”
