Police chief places police units on red alert over vandalism and looting during #EndBadGovernance protests

The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has placed all police units on red alert following recorded cases of violence during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.

Egbetokun made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that the incidents in several big cities in the country on the first day of the demonstrations showed that the demonstrations had turned into acts of rebellion and mass looting.

The police chief regretted that the people who promoted the idea of ​​the protest were not there to lead it.

He said criminals had unleashed themselves on innocent Nigerians and their hard-earned businesses and properties were being looted and destroyed.

Egbetokun noted that the motive of the rioters was to loot and destroy private and government properties.

He said the damage so far was mind-boggling, adding that there was damage in Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger and Jigawa States.

He said police stations had been destroyed in attempts in some states to take over government houses and loot infrastructure.

The police chief regretted that several warehouses and shops had so far been looted and in some cases, completely destroyed.

He said: “In view of the current situation, the Nigerian Police Force has placed all units on red alert.

“Our officers are fully mobilised and ready to respond swiftly and decisively to any further threats to public safety and order.

“We remain committed and determined to protect lives and property and ensure law and order is maintained throughout the country.”
