Trump Says He’s Agreeing to Debate on Fox While Harris Sticks to ABC Plan

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he has accepted Fox News’ offer to hold a debate with presumptive Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

Meanwhile, Harris’s campaign says it will stick with its original plan for a debate on ABC News.

My life is nice

In the post, former President Trump claimed that the rumored Fox News debate will take place on September 4.

“I have agreed with FoxNews to discuss with Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th.

“The debate was previously scheduled against Sleepy Joe Biden on ABC, but was cut short because Biden will no longer be participating and I am in a lawsuit against ABC Network and George Slopadopoulos, creating a conflict of interest,” he said.

In his post, Trump said the debate would be held in Pennsylvania, “at a site in an area to be determined.”
.
“The debate moderators will be Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, and the rules will be similar to my debate with Sleepy Joe, who was treated horribly by his own party – BUT WITH A FULL AUDIENCE IN THE ARENA!” Trump said.

Harris’s campaign said Saturday that “Donald Trump is scared” and hopes Fox News will “pull him out” of the debate it had already agreed to with ABC News.

“He needs to stop playing games and show up for the debate he’s already committed to on September 10,” Michael Tyler, Harris’s campaign communications director, told CBS News in a statement. “The vice president will be there one way or another to seize the opportunity to speak to a national audience in prime time.”

Tyler said the campaign is open to discussing further debate, but only after what both campaigns have already agreed to takes place.

“Mr. Anytime, anywhere, anywhere should have no problem with this, unless he’s too scared to show up on the 10th,” Tyler added.

In a separate statement on X, formerly Twitter, Harris said: “It’s interesting how ‘any time, any place’ becomes ‘a specific time, a specific safe space.’ I will be there on September 10, as he agreed. I hope to see him there.”

CBS News has reached out to Fox News for comment.

Trump and President Biden, while he was still a contender for the White House, agreed in May to participate in two presidential debates. The first was held in June and was hosted by CNN, while the second was scheduled for September 10 and would be hosted by ABC News.

Last month, Harris accused Trump of backtracking on his previous agreement to attend the Sept. 10 presidential debate, telling reporters, “I’m ready.”

Mr. Biden’s poor showing in the first debate sparked calls for him to end his reelection bid, and he announced he was abandoning his campaign for a second term. After Mr. Biden dropped out of the race, Harris announced her candidacy and has since received the support of a majority of the delegates needed to secure the Democratic nomination. The Democratic National Convention will be held Aug. 19-22 in Chicago.

A majority of Democratic delegates voted to elect Harris as the party’s nominee for president in a virtual roll call vote on Friday, her campaign and the Democratic Party said, cementing her status at the top of the ticket heading into November.

CBS News extended invitations to the Harris and Trump campaigns, inviting the candidates to participate in the presidential and vice presidential debates in early September. [CBS News]
