The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified 124 Nigerians among foreign nationals targeted for deportation for criminal convictions, marking the latest phase of President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement policy targeting undocumented migrants with criminal records.

DHS said the action underscored its determination to meet the administration’s immigration agenda.
“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is highlighting the worst of the worst foreign criminals apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),” the agency said.
He added that DHS and ICE personnel were “keeping President Trump’s promise and carrying out mass deportations, starting with the worst of the worst.”
Trump, who returned to the White House on January 20, 2025, signed a series of executive orders on his first day in office declaring illegal immigration a national emergency and directing federal agencies to tighten border controls and speed up the removal of undocumented migrants.
One of the directives, titled “Protecting the American People Against Invasion,” specifically directed immigration authorities to prioritize the apprehension and deportation of migrants deemed threats to public safety and national security.
The White House has consistently defended this policy. Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt recently reiterated that the administration will continue to enforce U.S. immigration laws by removing undocumented immigrants with criminal records, describing the campaign as a central pillar of President Trump’s immigration agenda.
Official U.S. immigration data shows Guatemala has recorded the highest number of deportees since the renewed enforcement campaign began, followed by Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador. Deportation flights have also been extended to destinations in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
Nigeria has also faced increased immigration controls in recent months. In June, the United States imposed partial visa restrictions on Nigerian citizens, citing concerns about identity management, information sharing, visa overstay rates and security checks.
