Belgian Pro League club KRC Genk have secured the future of Nigerian defender Christian Akpan after handing him a new four-year contract that will keep him at the Cegeka Arena until 2030.
The extension underlines the club’s confidence in the 21-year-old defender, whose impressive rise through the ranks has made him one of Genk’s brightest young prospects.
The new deal is also a big boost for Akpan, who has enjoyed a rapid rise over the past two years and recently earned his first senior cap for Nigeria.
Reward for rapid development
Akpan arrived at Genk in 2023 and immediately began his development within the club’s youth structure.
Known for his composure on the ball, tactical awareness and versatility along the defensive line, the Nigerian has quickly established himself as one of the standout performers in the academy.
His consistent performances convinced the coaching staff that he was ready for the next phase of his career, leading to his promotion to the senior team.
The new contract reflects Genk’s belief that the young defender has the qualities necessary to become an important member of the first team in the years to come.
With the deal valid until 2030, both player and club hope the partnership continues to thrive.
Dream debut in the first team
One of the biggest moments of Akpan’s career came during the 2025/26 season, when he made his first-team debut against Gent.
The young defender rose to the occasion with a confident performance that earned him the Man of the Match award.
His performance showcased his ability to remain calm under pressure, making crucial interceptions and contributing effectively whenever his team was in possession of the ball.
The performance also strengthened the faith that Genk’s coaching staff had placed in him and strengthened his reputation as one of the club’s emerging talents.
Since then, he has continued to work to establish himself in the first team, whilst gaining valuable experience at the highest level of Belgian football.
International turning point with the Super Eagles
Akpan’s progress at club level has not gone unnoticed by the Nigerian national team selectors.
His consistent performances earned him his first invitation to the Super Eagles, giving him the opportunity to represent his country at senior level for the first time.
The defender made his international debut in Nigeria’s friendly against Portugal last month.
He started the match and played for 60 minutes before making way for Abdullahi Bewene.
Although the Super Eagles ultimately suffered a 2-1 defeat, Akpan’s presence marked a significant milestone in his career and gave him valuable experience against quality opposition.
The debut also highlighted Nigeria’s growing pool of talented young defenders capable of competing at the highest level.
A bright future ahead
By signing Akpan to a long-term contract, Genk have demonstrated their determination to retain one of the club’s most promising young players.
The Belgian side have built a strong reputation for developing emerging talent before they can embark on successful careers in Europe’s top leagues, and Akpan hopes to follow this path.
For the player, the contract offers stability and the opportunity to continue improving in an environment renowned for the development of young players.
It also puts him in a strong position to compete for more regular first-team football, whilst continuing to cement his place in the Super Eagles squad.
As he enters the next phase of his career, Akpan will aim to build on his impressive progress, establish himself as a key player for Genk and become a regular feature for Nigeria on the international stage.
