Couldn’t say no: Super Eagles star defends big-money move to Saudi Arabia

William Troost-Ekong has agreed to join Saudi Arabian side Al Khalood from Greek club PAOK in a deal that will see the player triple his salary in the Gulf region, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The 30-year-old Nigerian defender, who was named the most valuable player at the last African Cup of Nations, joined the Greek side last summer from English side Watford.

However, Ekong, who has been instrumental in PAOK’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers, has decided to leave the team in exchange for a huge salary in Saudi Arabia.

Al Khalood recently earned promotion to the top flight in Saudi Arabia and Ekong is seen by manager Paulo Duarte as an experienced defender who will help their side’s run in the top flight next season.

Not traditionally one of the league’s big spenders, the Super Eagles captain has reportedly been offered three times his current salary plus bonuses.

PAOK were reluctant to sell but after talks decided to let the defender go, who also pleaded with the club to see the transfer as an opportunity to make a lot of money before his career ends.
