Ogun government claims EFCC invitation to five officials unrelated to petition by former LGA boss, Wale Adedayo

The Ogun State Government said on Saturday that the invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to its officials was not linked to a petition allegedly filed by the former Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Wale Adedayo.

The commission on Tuesday questioned five Ogun State government officials at its zonal office in Ibadan, Oyo State.

It is alleged that the officials were invited in connection with a petition sent to the EFCC by Adedayo who was dismissed from office for alleged financial irregularities in September 2023.

Adedayo in August last year alleged that Governor Dapo Abiodun diverted N10.8 billion allocated to 20 local government areas in the state by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

However, in a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Kayode Akinmade, the government said the officials were not invited by the EFCC over alleged diversion of local government funds contrary to media claims.

The statement read: “Normally, there is no justification for responding to the antics of a notorious provocateur and troublemaker, who has made unsubstantiated and obscene allegations against Governor Dapo Abiodun and his administration, with the intention of causing division among the people and disrupting the stability of Ogun State.

“While we continue to respect media organizations as partners in progress, we categorically state that such reports are nothing but fake news and should be disregarded.

“Like officials from other state governments, Ogun State officials are not exempt from invitations by the anti-graft agency should clarification on any matter be required. It is reassuring that the EFCC has confirmed that our officials, as law-abiding citizens, honoured the invitation and have returned to duty.

“However, the claim that they were invited because of Wale Adedayo’s petition is a fabrication.

“However, the claim that they were invited because of a petition filed by Wale Adedayo, the chief propagandist who once accused his former boss, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, of being a serial killer, and who falsely claimed that his fellow chiefs supported his petition against Governor Abiodun—a claim they have vehemently denied—is a fabrication.

“The media as a pillar of society should not help rioters and immoral people in spreading lies.”
