PDP warns Central Government about regional autonomy, warns against creating new bureaucracy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concern over the Supreme Court ruling granting autonomy to local governments, warning that the Federal Government’s attempt to create another bureaucracy could be problematic.

“We are reviewing the ruling and we believe that the matter is not over,” PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba said at a world press conference in Abuja on Sunday.

“We emphasize the importance of resolving issues of this magnitude through dialogue and not through the courts,” the PDP spokesman said.

Ologunagba noted that the Federal Government’s attempt to create another bureaucracy under the control of local governments could lead to corruption and manipulation. “Any reform to local governments should be done in collaboration with the governors, not at the behest of the Federal Government,” he said.

The PDP spokesman also stressed that governors have a vital role in managing local governments and that issues arising in local governance should be handled by state governments, not the Federal Government.

“We will continue to discuss with the governor and seek solutions to ensure the efficiency of state government administration in local government,” he concluded.
