Police kill suspected kidnapper, seize weapons in Delta

Police officers in Delta have killed a member of a kidnap syndicate and seized the gang’s weapons in Delta State.

The state police spokesman, Bright Edafe, disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday in Warri.

He said the suspect was killed by special forces commandos during a gun duel with suspected hoodlums in Ughelli on Monday.

Edafe said: “On August 12, 2024, members of the Special Squad of the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Olufemi Abaniwonda, stationed in Ughelli, were under investigation together with suspected kidnappers, who were earlier arrested on July 18, and were attacked in Ewu Community in Ughelli area.

“A suspected arms dealer who supplied weapons to the gang for their kidnapping operations launched the attack in an attempt to free his associates.

“However, the criminals were defeated by the police as some of them fled into the bush with gunshot wounds, while the victim who was shot in the exchange of gunfire was taken to the General Hospital in Ughelli, where he later died while undergoing treatment.”

He said one Beretta pistol containing four live bullets, one pump-action pistol containing nine bullets, and one locally made pump-action revolver were seized from the suspects.
