FOMWAN urges President Tinubu to address rising food prices, insecurity in Nigeria

The Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to address the rising food prices and insecurity affecting the country.

The appeal was made in a communique released after the 39th Annual National Conference of FOMWAN in Akure, Ondo State, signed by the National President Hajiya Ra’afiah Sanni and the Public Relations Officer Hajiya Maimuna Momodu.

The communique expressed deep concern about the high cost of food, goods and services, highlighting that women bear a significant burden of this problem.

It said, “The conference is concerned about the high cost of food, goods and services in the country and is concerned that women bear the brunt of the problem.”

Additionally, FOMWAN voiced concerns over the rising insecurity in the country, stating, “FOMWAN notes with deep concern the rising rate of insecurity in the country.”

The group attributes these challenges to deviation from divine guidance, citing religious teachings: “These challenges are a result of our deviation from Allah’s command that if a people commit corruption, Allah has promised that they will be afflicted with hunger and insecurity.”

To address these issues, FOMWAN recommends several steps, including the promotion of Islamic and Western education, skills acquisition programs to improve women’s employment prospects, and self-help activities to enhance families’ economic security.

The communique urged, “The problematic situation can be prevented or improved by adopting a number of measures including the acquisition of optimal education, both Islamic and Western, the acquisition of skills to enhance women’s chances of obtaining paid employment and self-directed activities that can facilitate the economic security of their families.”

The organization also advocates for greater education and political participation for women to improve access to development and funding. It calls for collaboration with various levels of government and NGOs to improve agricultural and employment opportunities for women and girls, and to build safe spaces for them.

The communique added, “Women should prioritize women’s education and political participation to increase women’s access to development, investment funding and other facilities for their families’ economic well-being.”

FOMWAN stressed the need for a safer environment for women to improve their well-being and urged law enforcement against criminals to address the root causes of insecurity.

The statement concluded, “FOMWAN emphasizes the need to ensure that women have a safe environment to engage in activities that impact their well-being.”
