Former New York presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has called for the regulation of social media platforms, especially TikTok, because he said the platforms were causing more harm than good to Nigeria and Nigerians.
In a post shared on X’s official account on Thursday, Ahmad condemned incidents where criminal elements used the platform to convey vital information to their criminal associates.
Ahmad, who later called on the federal government to come up with stricter regulations on monitoring content on TikTok, wrote: “It is alarming that TikTok, a global social media platform, is being used by criminals such as bandits, kidnappers and terrorists in Nigeria to interact with the public and, in some cases, even engage in live chats to defend their nefarious activities.
“The platform causes more harm than good to our country, as it not only amplifies the voices of these criminals but also emboldens them by providing a space to spread their propaganda and misinformation.
“Nigeria needs stricter regulation and monitoring of content on TikTok to prevent dangerous people from using it for their nefarious agendas.”
