Suspected bandits attack Operation Burst Base in Oyo, Torch Patrol Van

Suspected bandits on Sunday attacked a Joint Security Task Force base, popularly known as Operation Burst, in the Igbeti axis of Oorelope Local Government Area of ​​Oyo State, setting a patrol van and part of the structure on fire.

PLATFORM TIMES reported that the attackers allegedly stormed the security base in large numbers and opened fire on personnel stationed at the facility.

The incident, which reportedly occurred along Igbeti axis, has heightened security concerns in the area, with security agencies reportedly stepping up efforts to trace the attackers.

According to a Tribune report, the attackers attempted to invade the security post, overpower the staff and take their weapons.

A security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers arrived in large numbers and used what were described as powerful weapons during the assault.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the bandits allegedly stormed the base in large numbers and opened fire on security personnel with what were described as powerful weapons,” the source said.

The source added that the attackers were suspected of trying to take control of the facility and deprive staff of their weapons.

The attack was reportedly repelled after the Operation Burst command mobilized personnel from sister security agencies to reinforce those at the base.

The attackers then fled the area following reinforcements, the sources said.

A source within the Oorelope Security Command also confirmed that a block within the security base and a patrol van were set ablaze during the attack.

The source said the fire destroyed the affected structures, adding that further details will be released as the investigation continues.

At the time of writing, it is not yet clear whether the attackers managed to remove weapons or ammunition from the security center.

However, the security command reportedly said that no casualty was reported during the incident.

Another source from one of the sister security agencies also confirmed the attack but requested anonymity because she was not authorized to speak publicly about the operation.

Following the incident, security officers reportedly intensified patrols and intelligence-gathering activities across the area in a bid to identify and arrest the perpetrators of the attack.

The development comes amid persistent security concerns in some parts of Oyo State, particularly in communities bordering areas considered vulnerable to criminal activities.

As of this writing, there was no official public statement providing full details of the incident, including the identities of the attackers, the extent of damage to the structure, or whether any weapons were taken during the assault.
