Aisha Yesufu reprimands Labour Party leader Abure over alleged embezzlement of party funds

Social critic and co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, has responded to allegations by the embattled national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, that she and Pastor Itua Ighodalo, brother of Edo State PDP governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, were responsible for managing the party’s campaign funds in the 2023 general elections.

Abure who made the allegations at a press conference after the party’s National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on Monday, denied the allegations.
that he mismanaged party funds, blaming Yesufu and Ighodalo for embezzlement of funds running to N3.5 billion.

According to Abure, his party never had access to the account opened for donations to support its candidate, Peter Obi, and insisted that only Yesufu and Ighodalo were signatories to the account.

“The party has never been involved in the distribution of those resources. Our interest is to see how we can produce a president for the party. How that is done is not our concern,” Abure said.

“Therefore, we give them freedom. We allow them to entrust their resources to whomever they want. We follow them faithfully by allowing them to manage campaign funds.

“On donations, the party was not involved in collecting any campaign donations; the donations were channeled into an account opened for campaign purposes, with Aisha Yesufu and Pastor Itua Ighodalo as signatories.

“They are also responsible for payments to polling station agents. The party does not handle payments to these agents. We leave the list to the campaign board and those who manage the funds to pay agents working for the presidential election. Therefore, it is not good if someone accuses me of mismanaging party funds,” he said.

But in his denial of the allegations, Yesufu, in a post on Tuesday, said Abure was lying as he did not embezzle party funds during the 2023 general election campaign.

In his post, he said Abure was still living in the past, where he thought someone could make such allegations without checking the facts for authenticity.

“Julius Abure argues that we are still in the 1980s, where one can lie shamelessly without having the facts checked,” he wrote.

In another tweet, Yesufu revealed Abure’s post on X in 2022, where he asked people to take ownership of the party’s campaign by donating a minimum of N1,000 to the Labour Party’s account.

Not finished with her denials against X, Yesufu made a YouTube video titled ‘Aisha Yesufu responds to Julius Abure’s lies’ in which she further denied embezzling party funds.
