The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) will present the “Icon of Sports in Nigeria” award to the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, in recognition of what the association has described as his administration’s contribution to the development and promotion of sports in the state.
The decision, according to the SWAN National Secretariat, is part of the association’s efforts to recognize individuals and institutions whose interventions and support have contributed to the growth of the sport and created opportunities for athletes, coaches, administrators and other stakeholders.
SWAN National President, Isaiah Kemje Benjamin, made the decision known through the association’s General Secretary, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, saying the recognition was driven by the administration’s focus on sports infrastructure, athletes and sporting activities in Kaduna State.
Benjamin said the appointment reflects what SWAN sees as an ongoing focus on sports development under the current administration, particularly initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for youth and strengthening the environment for sporting activities.
Kaduna’s sporting heritage
The SWAN President noted that Kaduna has a long-standing sporting legacy and has produced notable footballers, athletes and other sporting personalities who have represented Nigeria at national and international levels.
He stressed that developing sports at the subnational level requires sustained investment in infrastructure, grassroots talent development and partnerships between government, sports administrators, athletes, the private sector and the media.
“The recognition reflects the importance of sustained investment and commitment to the development of sport at the sub-national level. We believe that recognition of such contributions can encourage stronger partnerships between government, athletes, administrators, private sector and media for the continued growth of Nigerian sports,” Benjamin said.
He added that the award is consistent with SWAN’s broader goal of promoting constructive engagement among stakeholders in the sports sector and encouraging initiatives that expand opportunities for athletes and youth.
The association said the presentation will also provide an opportunity to draw attention to the role of sport in youth development, social inclusion, talent discovery, employment and national integration.
Reconstruction of Ahmadu Bello Stadium
The proposed recognition comes at a time when Kaduna is witnessing increased activity in the field of sports infrastructure and organization of sports events.
One of the most important projects is the reconstruction of the historic Ahmadu Bello Stadium, a facility that has played a significant role in Kaduna’s sporting history.
In February 2026, the National Sports Commission and the Kaduna State Government signed a memorandum of understanding to transfer ownership of the stadium to the state for immediate rehabilitation following presidential approval.
The Kaduna state government subsequently announced plans to develop the facility into a major sports complex. The state set the expected seating capacity at around 32,000, while Governor Sani later said the completed stadium will have a capacity of 33,000 and feature a hybrid turf and synthetic field.
The governor also linked the investment to Kaduna’s historic contribution to Nigerian football, saying the state has produced several players who have gone on to make their mark at national and international levels.
During an inspection of the ongoing project in September, former Nigerian internationals Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal and Emmanuel Babayaro were among football personalities who visited the facility. Amokachi said the governor also fulfilled a decades-old promise to members of Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning team in Kaduna by allocating plots of land to some of them.
Township Stadium attracts attention
Apart from the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, the administration also oversaw the upgrading of the Uba Sani Township Stadium.
The facility, according to the Kaduna State Government, has a capacity of 10,000 and includes changing rooms for the home and away teams, a referees’ lounge, media and conference facilities, as well as toilets.
The stadium is expected to host local league matches and provide another venue for sporting activities in the state, complementing the larger Ahmadu Bello Stadium project.
The development of the facilities was also accompanied by greater involvement of sports stakeholders.
In August, Kaduna hosted the 2026 Triennial National Congress of SWAN Delegates, bringing sports writers and delegates from across the country to the state.
The congress, held on the theme “Harnessing the Power of Sports and Media for National Development, Youth Empowerment and Global Competitiveness”, provided a platform for discussion on the relationship between sports, media and national development. Subsequently, the national leadership of SWAN also participated in a tour of the state’s sporting facilities.
Host major sporting events
The state also continued to attract sporting activities involving national teams and international opponents.
Kaduna is currently hosting the Super Sand Eagles’ 23-day training camp, which began on September 21 and will run until October 14, 2026.
The schedule includes international friendlies against Senegal on October 2 and 4, as well as a CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana on October 10.
Hosting the national beach football team provides the State with the opportunity to leverage its sporting facilities and organizational capacity by bringing athletes, officials and other stakeholders to Kaduna.
It also adds to the administration’s stated objective of positioning Kaduna as a destination for major sporting activities. The state government said the rehabilitation of the facilities is intended not only to support competitions, but also create opportunities in tourism, investment and employment.
Beyond infrastructure
For SWAN, however, the importance of sports development goes beyond building or renovating stadiums.
The association has consistently positioned itself as a stakeholder in broader conversations about sports administration, athlete welfare, professional development and the relationship between the media and sports authorities.
Its national leadership recently engaged the Nigerian Football Federation on the need for stronger collaboration, while calling for reforms in football governance and supporting initiatives focused on athlete wellbeing.
In this context, the recognition of “Sports Icon in Nigeria” is presented as recognition of the importance of continued support for sports at the state level.
Benjamin said stronger collaboration between government, sports associations, athletes, investors and media will be needed to build a more sustainable sports ecosystem in Nigeria.
The award is therefore expected to attract government officials, sports administrators, athletes, coaches, journalists and other stakeholders, and the presentation will provide an opportunity to highlight Kaduna’s sporting heritage and ongoing efforts to strengthen its infrastructure and sporting calendar.
As the State continues with the reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, the upgrading of other facilities and the hosting of national and international sports programs, attention will be increasingly focused on how such investments translate into sustainable opportunities for athletes, coaches, clubs, schools and sports-related businesses.
For SWAN, the recognition by Governor Uba Sani is meant to underline the association’s confidence in constructive engagement with stakeholders whose policies and interventions, it believes, contribute to the development of Nigerian sport.
The award also comes as SWAN begins a new three-year administrative term following the 2026 Triennial Delegates Congress in Kaduna, with Benjamin retaining the national presidency and Okonkwo returning as general secretary.
