A media aide to former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has reportedly been thrown in jail for criticizing the incumbent governor’s wife, Fatima Ahmad Aliyu, for spraying dollars at her recent birthday party.
According to a user X with the handle @Sarki_Sultan, the victim, Shafi’u Tureta, was arrested after the governor’s wife wrote a petition to the police accusing him of character assassination and defamation by posting a video of her and other guests spraying dollar bills at the party.
The video has reportedly taken the internet by storm as Nigerians lament the alleged waste of resources amid the country’s economic downturn.
State Police Public Relations Officer Rufa’i Ahmad, who confirmed Tureta’s arrest and subsequent arraignment in court, said the activist was arrested in August following a petition filed by the First Lady, on charges of character assassination.

Following his arrest, Tureta was arraigned before the High Court which ordered his detention in a correctional center.
“This is Shafi’u Tureta @shafeeutrt, he was arrested and thrown in jail for criticizing and posting a video of the Sokoto First Lady dancing to a money party on her birthday, and for criticizing the Sokoto state governor for spending N1.2 billion to repair 25 boreholes. He has now spent almost two weeks in jail!”, he wrote in a post on Tuesday.
“It was not Shafi’u who uploaded the video circulating on social media, he got it from a friend who uploaded it on WhatsApp status according to Shafi’u’s brother. Shafi’u’s only crime was exercising his constitutional right to expression.
“We call for the unconditional release of Shafi’u Tureta. We are running a democracy in Nigeria and not a dictatorship. The Sokoto state governor should focus on fulfilling his campaign promises but going after opposition members will only make you unpopular! #FreeShafiu.”
