National Assembly donates N174 million for Borno flood victims

The National Assembly on Tuesday donated N174 million to victims of the recent floods in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The Senate contributed N74 million, while the House of Representatives gave N100 million.

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who led the Senate delegation to Maiduguri on behalf of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, announced that each of the 108 senators contributed N500,000, totaling N54 million.

He himself contributed N10 million. The Northern Senatorial Forum contributed another N10 million, bringing the Senate’s total contribution to N74 million.

Jibrin was received by the Governor of Borno State Prof. Babagana Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri.

He said: “Whatever touches Borno touches the entire country. That is why I am here with some of my colleagues, even though the Senate President was here yesterday (Monday) representing the Senate as a whole.

“When the Senate President came, he did not disclose what we wanted to contribute. The situation of the victims touched us deeply. After our meeting yesterday, we agreed to contribute the sum of N54 million.

“Each senator contributed N500,000, totaling N54 million. Personally, I contributed N10 million. I pray that this flood will not happen again in Borno State and the entire country.”

However, a House delegation, led by the Chairman of the Northern Regional Caucus, Alhassan Doguwa, also visited Maiduguri.

Doguwa announced the intervention of the House of Representatives on behalf of the Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. He commended President Bola Tinubu for his swift response to the plight of the people of the state.

“We also pledge the readiness of the National Assembly to engage with the Federal Government to come up with legislative framework or budget intervention to assist state governments in addressing the impact of the flood disaster in the country,” Doguwa said.
