After evading arrest, former Governor Bello appears at EFCC office

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has honoured an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) according to a statement from his media office.

Bello’s decision to appear before the anti-corruption agency came after consulting with his family, legal team and political associates.

The former governor has been embroiled in a tussle with the anti-graft agency over alleged financial irregularities while he was Kogi’s number one citizen. He and three others face 19 charges related to money laundering worth N80.2 billion.

However, Bello insisted that he “has nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”

In a statement, he said, “The case has been taken to a competent court, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello has been represented by his legal team at every hearing. It is important for the former Governor to honour the EFCC’s invitation to clear his name because he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear”².

Bello also expressed his support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting the government’s efforts to ensure sustainable economic development and fight corruption in the country.

The former governor was accompanied by several prominent Nigerians to the EFCC headquarters. His media office expressed the hope that the commission would respect his fundamental rights during their interaction.

More details about Bello’s involvement with the EFCC are expected to be revealed in the coming days.

Bello had earlier evaded arrest when EFCC officers stormed his residence to pick him up. He was assisted by the incumbent governor, Usman Ododo, who whisked him away in his official vehicle along with his bodyguards.

In April, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede had vowed to resign if the embattled former governor was not prosecuted. Olukoyede vowed to see Mr. Bello through to the end.

He also promised that anyone who obstructs the arrest of the former governor will be brought to justice.
