There was drama and tension in the early hours of Sunday following Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s decision to storm the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin City.
However, he was immediately chased away from the scene by police led by DIG Frank Mba.
The governor, accompanied by his security aides, was reported to have stormed
The KPU office which is the main vote counting venue for the ongoing gubernatorial election, at around 3:00 am and headed straight to the office of the Election Commissioner (KPU), Anugbum Onuoha, with the intention of holding an impromptu meeting, but about 30 minutes later, he was forced out of the office by the police.
It is alleged that Obaseki entered the KPU building without prior notice to protest a number of alleged irregularities in the vote counting results in a number of regions, including in his electoral district of Oredo.
During the ensuing commotion, members of the All Progressives Congress led by Monday Okpebholo’s running mate Dennis Idahosa led protesters to demand Obaseki’s removal from the INEC building.

Idahosa was heard shouting loudly from outside the gate, along with other residents demanding the governor leave because he stated that he did not deserve to be there.
“Obaseki must go. He should not be here. He is not an ECP staff. The Nigerian police force must not compromise,” Idahosa shouted.
After an argument, a joint team of police led by DIG Mba and soldiers entered the location and at 04.10 am escorted the governor and his team out of the location.
Minutes before Obaseki was led out by Mba, the APC National Secretary, Surajudeen Basiru, spoke to journalists and said the governor had no reason to be at the INEC premises.
“He is not a candidate. He has no reason to be here,” Bashiru said, describing the governor’s actions as an abuse of office.
