Bandits have reportedly killed two soldiers, a village chief and six residents in Egwuma, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident, according to local residents, occurred at around 17.00 yesterday.
A villager, who did not wish to be named, said that the bandits took away the soldiers’ weapons including pistols, after killing two of them and seriously injuring one.
The bandits reportedly came through the Nasarawa and Kogi axis to carry out the attack.
A former member of the State Council representing Agatu constituency, Sule Audu, told journalists that no fewer than nine people including two soldiers, the Egwuma chief and six villagers were killed in the attack on the community.

“The incident occurred between 4pm and 5pm on Tuesday. The bandits attacked Egwuma via Akile axis, boycotting the road where the army was stationed.
“They shot at people in their homes. They killed the village clan head and six other people as well as two soldiers and confiscated the soldiers’ weapons.
“One of the soldiers was seriously injured. They returned to the part of Agatu’s land which they had occupied; villages like Ogwumogbo, Ejuma, Akile, Okpogbolo, Okpiye, Echije.
“On Sunday the people returned home after the army guaranteed their safety, then they were killed on Tuesday. The affected villages have long been abandoned after the bandit invasion. They will attack and run back to the villages they occupied,” he told reporters.
Sule revealed that the attackers had been besieging and taking over a number of communities in Agatu LGA for a long time.
He added that the army had helped in repelling the bandits’ attacks.
