The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has reportedly begun efforts to resolve its dispute with Cristiano Ronaldo following the captain’s surprise departure from the national team camp.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, cited by Goal, FPF officials plan to meet Ronaldo next week in a bid to resolve the disagreement and restore relations between the player, coach Jorge Jesus and the federation.
The development marks a change in the federation’s approach following Ronaldo’s departure from the Portuguese camp in Copenhagen earlier this week, an incident which has raised questions about the future of his international career.
The Federation tries to mend relations
Marca reports that FPF wants to mend its relationship with Ronaldo and prevent the recent disagreement from abruptly ending his career in Portugal.
Federation officials reportedly believe the 41-year-old deserves a respectful and dignified end to his international career in recognition of his contribution to Portuguese football over the years.
The FPF initially avoided addressing the details surrounding Ronaldo’s departure and instead kept its focus on Portugal’s sporting commitments.
“The entire delegation remains fully focused on the national team’s upcoming commitments and on achieving the defined objectives,” the federation said in its statement at the time.
Ronaldo promises to reveal the reasons
Ronaldo, meanwhile, has made it known that sooner or later he will explain why he decided to leave the national team retreat.
“In due time I will tell all Portuguese the truth about the reasons that pushed me to leave the national team to which I have always dedicated myself. Now it is time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception,” he wrote on social media.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner left the field after tensions reportedly emerged over his situation under Jesus.
Portugal subsequently defeated Denmark 4-2 without Ronaldo in the Nations League, but his absence continued to generate considerable attention around the national team.
According to Marca, the proposed meeting next week could offer Ronaldo, Jesus and federation officials the opportunity to address the disagreement and reopen the dialogue.
The outcome of the discussions could help determine how Ronaldo’s international career with Portugal will proceed after the latest dispute.
