Achimugu’s investigation has nothing to do with Atiku, Sanwo-Olu-EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) said on Friday night his investigation of a socialite, Ms. Aisha Achimugu is not politically motivated.

The Head of the EFCC media and publicity, Dele Oyewale, who made this clarification in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said the investigation had no relationship with the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or the Governor of the State of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The previous commission stated that Achimugu, 51, from the regional government area in the Kogi state, was sought because of the alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

Contrary to claims in several places, Oyewale stressed that the Achimugu investigation has no relationship with any political figure.

The spokesman said: “He is being investigated because of the alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering and since then it was declared sought by the commission.”

He said EFCC began his investigation of Achimugu in 2022.

“Although he sought orders in court to prevent the commission from catching, investigating, inviting, or holding it, the order was challenged and emptied on February 19, 2025, by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

“The court decides that no court has the power to stop the power of police investigations, EFCC, or any institution that is determined based on laws to investigate crimes when there is a reasonable suspicion or a lot of evidence of violations.

“The court also reinforces the order of confiscation of temporary assets suspected as a result of crime, rejecting Achimugu’s lawsuit due to lack of services.

“The things above clearly stipulate that the EFCC case against it has no direct or remote relationship with politicians or covert or open references for any political involvement or transactions.

“EFCC is non-party and non-sectarian. We encourage people to continue to have confidence in the professionalism of the commission without submitting foreign considerations for their work,” the spokesman added.
