IFeanyi EjioFor

A legal practitioner and human rights activist, Sir Ifeanyi EjioFor, accused Nigeria police of operating outside her jurisdiction by recovering the debt from a woman on the instigation of her husband.

The accident, which took place at the headquarters of the police forces in Abuja Sunday (Mother’s Day), has aroused a serious drama, a wild condemnation and is already causing ripples, among the police hierarchy.

“The unequivocal answer is no. Legal laws and numerous judicial precedents have constantly stated that the Nigerian police force (NPF) is not authorized to act as a debt recovery agency,” he said.

EjioFor, lawyer of Biafra’s indigenous people (iPob) was reacting to the devastating report of police brutality – such as the staff of the monitoring unit of the headquarters of the police forces of Nigeria, arrested, brutalized, tortured and detained Mrs. Joy Chinenye, based on a petition, based on her husband, George Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Obinna Ungbu: Smart Debtus: Smart Smart: Smart Smart Smart Smart: Smart Smart: Smart.

According to him, section 4 of the Nigeria Police Act clearly outlines the duties of the NPF, providing for any provision for the recovery of the debt.

He said: “In addition, the higher courts have repeatedly established that the police cannot be used as a tool for private financial disputes. Some remarkable cases that strengthen this position include:
Kure V Police Commissioner (2020) LPELR-49378 (SC). Madaki & Anor V GTB & Anor (2022) LPELR-57419 (CA).

“On one day recognized globally on Sunday, a mother of three children found herself unfairly detained instead of celebrating motherhood. Acting on a petition by her legally married husband, the staff of the monitoring unit of the headquarters of the police of Nigeria Abuja, on March 28, 2025, arrested, brutalized, tortured and detained his insurance.

“Her husband had presumably given his funds for Forex trading, which he was unable to repay. Rather than seeking a civil appeal – assuming that he had a valid cause of action against his wife – he enlisted the police. The agents stormed their home in Lagos, arrested her strongly in the presence of their children and held his Annex Fcid, Panti.

“There, he was forced to transfer ₦ 5 million to his husband’s account. When he was unable to commit himself to paying further ₦ 10 million, he was transported by force to Abuja and was held at the notorious slaughter detention structure, a well -known detention land for hardened criminals.

“Incredibly, in his absence, his husband transferred their children and took possession of his personal things.”

The activist told journalists that it was a direct violation of the police directives.

He said that the Nigeria Police Service Commission (NPSC) under the distinct president, Dig Hashimu Argengu (RTD) and the police inspector (IGP) have issued clear directives that prohibit officers to engage in complaints of land controversies, arrests for proxy, recovery of debt, among others.

EjioFor said: “Despite this, the officers involved in this case have clearly ignored these directives, giving priority to obvious private financial interests on their constitutional mandate”.

He invited the police inspector, Kayode Egbetokun, to order the immediate and unconditional release of Mrs. Joy Smart Chinenye; start an in -depth investigation on this serious abuse of power; and sanction all the officers involved to discourage the misconduct future conduct.

He said: “While they take into consideration a legal action, it is essential to bring this case to the attention of the public to prevent further profanation of the rule of law. The Nigerian police must not be used unscrupulous as a tool to resolve private disputes, especially in a day who thought of honoring mothers.

“This is particularly very well given that the highest level of the police authority has severely felt and forbidden to his staff to indulge in these ignoble acts that obscure the reputation of the institution”.
