15 feared dead at Bayelsa Boat Mishap

At least 15 people, including two women, were feared to die in a ship accident in the Akede community in Sagbama, the area of ​​the local government in the state of Bayelsa on Tuesday.

Spokesman for the State Police Command, Musa Muhammad, told reporters on Wednesday that the accident occurred when the speedboat collided with a fishing boat in the area.

He said the speedboat driver was in police custody to be questioned.

An eyewitness said that 13 passengers on a speedboat that had a bad fate were still missing.

He added that some divers were already on the water to save the missing passengers.

“Speedboat named Meeting Marine, powered by a 115-Kuda engine, traveling from Anyama Ijaw to the Lobia and Foropa community when colliding with fishing boats on the sea of ​​the Akede community.

“A woman and a young girl on a fishing ship drowned,” said an eyewitness.

Chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Workers Union in the state of Bayelsa, Mr. Ogoniba Ipigansi, also confirmed the incident.

He said trade unions and divers were already on the seasures of the Akede community for the rescue mission.
