Peter Obi praised the police for withdrawing Sanusi’s invitation in the midst of tension in Kano

The former presidential candidate of the Labor Party, Peter Obi, has praised the Nigerian police for canceling an invitation that was previously expanded to Emir Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, described the decision on time.

Obi, in a statement posted on his official account X (previously Twitter) on Monday, said the initial call was wrong and at risk of increasing tension in the state, which had experienced increased sensitivity.

The controversy began after the Emir was reportedly invited by the police because of the alleged murder incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration last Sunday.

The quarrel was said to have occurred shortly after the traditional durbar ceremony, which was previously suggested by the government of the state canoeing not to refrain. Durbar, a cultural procession that is often held after Eid al -Fitr prayer in several parts of Northern Nigeria, traditionally displays a horseshoe display by community leaders.

Sanusi reportedly walked to Eid al -Fitr but returned to his palace by riding a horse – a step that, according to several reports, might have contributed to tension.

Following the next public incident and criticism, the Police Inspector General, Kayode Egbetokun, decided to withdraw the invitation.

Instead of calling the Emir to Abuja, Egbetokun directed the Kano State Police Command to take over the problem locally and gather the necessary statements, thus calming concerns that continue to increase on the potential for federal outreach.

React to development, Obi praised the restraint of IGP and emphasized the importance of handling such things at the appropriate jurisdiction level.

“There is a police order that is fully functioning in Kano, with leadership that is able to manage such problems,” Obi said. “That is why we have a Police Commissioner and Assistant Zonal Inspector General to ensure that situations like this are handled locally and precisely.”

He further notes that the decentralization of conflict resolution helps maintain public trust in institutions and promote peace in an easily changing environment.

Obi stated the hope that such a reasonable approach would be a standard practice, strengthen good stability and governance at all levels.

“A decentralized approach will encourage peace and public trust,” he added.
