Autonomy: The court postponed the algon lawsuit against the federal government, the state until May 29

Judge Inyang Ekwo from the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday postponed a lawsuit filed by the Nigerian Regional Government Association (Algon) against the Federal Government and the State until May 29.

The Supreme Court on July 11, 2024, gave financial autonomy to 774 regional government territories in the country.

However, Algon filed a lawsuit after alleged failure by the state government to comply with the Decree of the High Court.

In a marked lawsuit: FHC/ABJ/CS/353/2025, the trustee registered from the Algon demanded that 774 LGA be given representatives at the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting where the allocation was discussed.

Attorney General Federation (AGF), Minister of Finance, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), State Finance Commissioner, Minister of Budget and National Planning, and General Federation Accountants are registered as respondents in the lawsuit.

Also registered is the mobilization of income, allocation and fiscal commission; Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, various commercial banks, and one old Bello as the defendant in the lawsuit.

The saints, in the lawsuit, urged the court to state that given the Supreme Court’s decision on July 11, 2024, respondents could not withdraw the 774 LGA money without their consent, among other assistance.
