A member of the Chamber of Representatives that represents the federal electoral college of Rrano/Bunkure/Kibiya of the State of Kano, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, recommended to North hunters to desist from traveling in the southern parts of the country for their activities, citing the concerns for safety.
Rurum said that the warning became necessary after the recent killing of 16 Kano State Hunters in Uromi, in the state of Edo.
Speaking on Thursday in Torankawa in the area of the local government of Bunkure during a visit of condolences to the families of the deceased hunters, the legislator expressed profound concern for the risks involved.
He observed that factors such as linguistic barriers, cultural differences and the presence of local weapons such as damned guns, swords and knives transported by northern hunters could easily arouse suspicion and tension in the host communities, leading to violence and loss of lives.
“Transporting dangerous weapons and moving with them, especially in this sensitive period of insecurity throughout the country, will surely send a wrong signal and can easily cause chaos. Therefore, our hunters should desist from it,” said Rurum.
He recalled that recently, over 30 hunters from his hometown in Rrano have been arrested in the state of ondo.
“Personally I went to see the Governor and I presented evidence to show that they were not criminals before being released. If those who arrested them had acted without meaning like the attackers of Uromi, the story would have been different,” he said.
Rurum has given N5 million to the families of the killed hunters and promised to immediately start the construction of a primary and secondary school of Islamiyya in the area for the benefit of the orphans left behind.
Even speaking, the State President of a faction by the New Nigeria People’s Party (Nnpp), Senator Mas’ud El-Jibrin Doguwa, expressed sadness for the murders, describing the accident as a painful lesson that should guide future actions to prevent an anniversary.
