The Catholic Bishop of the diocese of Sokoto, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, invited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to face the suffering of the country, citing a widespread insecurity and hunger among the Nigerians.
Passing the situation of Nigeria to the Crucifixion of Christ in his Easter speech, Bishop Kukah fondly urged the president to relieve the suffering of the Nigerians, who described as a “cross of evil”.
He said that Nigeria is afflicted by a culture of brutality and ferocity that has never been evidenced first in its history, placing the country outside the boundaries of human civilization.
“Throughout the country, every day, innocent citizens are kidnapped and kept in the most inhuman conditions. A dark death ball is so much languidly from north to south. It is impossible to find a house, a family or a community that has not been captured in the cusp of this ferocity.”
Kukah stressed that while President Tinubu did not create these problems, the burden of leadership requires urgent action.
“Mr. President, we all admit that you have not erected this cross nor did our collective crucifixion carried out. Despite the Nigerians, they drew and bleeding on this cross of pain and senseless suffering for too long.”
He complained about a growing culture of cynicism and doubt as regards the ability of Nigeria to reach peace, adding that many citizens now feel hopeless.
The bishop, however, invited Christians to renew their faith, citing biblical references that encourage perseverance through suffering and trust in God’s promises.
Reflecting on the meaning of Easter, Kukah observed that for Christians he marks the triumph of Christ on death, an event that was preceded by the crucifixion of innocence.
“I am therefore using the metaphor of the cross to attract attention to the suffering and afflictions that have affected our country in recent years.”
He questioned the ability and will of the security agencies, suggesting that the Nigerians are left to ask whether their suffering is the result of incompetence or a left plot.
“Now are we in a dilemma and the question is simple: is the persistence of hosiciness is a declaration of the lack of ability of our men and women in uniform, or is it a proof that those on top are reaping the fruits of the financing of their war machine?”?
“In other words, the Nigerian lambs are sacrificed to an unknown God? Mr. President, take a step forward, reach the finish line and they break down from this cross of shame.”
