The general director of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Hon Bukola Olopade, has revealed that Nigeria’s young swimming feeling, Abduljabar Adama, has enlisted in the commission’s elite program, under the elite and podium athletes.
The Nigerian Aquatic Federation received the news when the Board presented the contingents that represented Nigeria in the 16th Junior Swimming Championship of Africa in Egypt to the general director in Abekuta on Tuesday at the National Sports Festival.
Nigeria had a successful campaign in Egypt that secured three gold medals and a bronze, all courtesy of Abduljabal Adama, 17.
Abduljabal broke the championship record in the 50 my butterfly the African record in the 50 m freestyle. He also won the freestyle of 100 meters.
Nigeria then ended third in general behind South Africa and Egypt.
The DG said that swimming is becoming one of the best sports where Nigeria can boast medals in the main international events, with the qualities that abound with the current set of young athletes.

“I sleep better now I know the quality we have in swimming. I see the light at the end of the tunnel to swim. Swimming has never categorized as an Olympic sport that Nigeria can keep abreast.

“With the harvest of swimmers we have now and the intentionality of the Aquatic Federation, along with the type of parents we have and the training team, I am sure that in 2028 we will be on the podium of the Olympic Games.”
“My trust is not enough and that is why in the name of the president of the commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, I want to assure the Aquatic Federation that we are going to put more funds and support for swimming.”
“We are going to intentionally support not only the current group of swimmers who went to Egypt, but to all minor competitions both at home and abroad,” he said.
The DG also praised the president of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Chinonye Aliyu, and praised the parents of young swimmers as national heroes.
“I want to thank the president of the Federation of Aquatics of Nigeria and the secretary and more especially the parents of our young athletes and their sacrifices so that these guys do what they do. The parents of our young guest athletes are our national heroes.”
The DG also announced financial incentives for all athletes representing Nigeria in Egypt and the coaches team. The DG announced 5 million Naira for Abduljabar Adama, while the remaining contingents obtain 2 million naira each.
