World Environment Day: Ogun -residents residents on plastic waste management

While the world has marked the 2025 edition of the World Environment Day, the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Chapter Abokuta, invited the residents of the Ogun State to undertake an urgent action against the growing threat of plastic pollution.

The theme of this year, “putting an end to plastic pollution”, was a collection point for environmental supporters from all over the world – and NES is using the opportunity to increase awareness of the dangers placed by the indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste.

Speaking in Abokuta Tuesday, the president of the chapter of Nes Abeokuta, Alhaji Jamiu Badmos, described plastic as a double -edged sword, using millions but deeply harmful when managed.

“Plastic is a precious material that provides means of subsistence for many, but its environmental impact is alarming,” said Badmus.

“It is not easily decomposed, obstructs drainage, kills aquatic life and leads to long -term health risks.”

Badmus warned that if the residents do not begin to manage their plastic waste responsibly, the state of Ogun and Nigeria at great risks in the face of more serious environmental and public crises.

He urged citizens to adopt better waste disposal practices by embracing recycling and participating in initiatives supported by the government such as the Blue Box program, which encourages the system ordering at the source.

“Do not simply throw your plastics in the basket: separate them, sell them to the recyclators and help to keep your environment clean,” he said. “It is not just the environment. It concerns our collective survival and the type of future we are building.”

The president of the NES also observed that environmental negligence often translates into economic and health arrest bars for communities. He invited residents to consider environmental responsibility as a civic duty, not just a government deal.

“Our environment is where we live. It feeds us, she repairs and determines our quality of life. If we destroy it, we destroy ourselves,” he said.

Jamiu has appealed to the actors of the government and private sector to invest more in waste management infrastructures and environmental education, stating that public lighting is essential to win the fight against plastic pollution.

The Times platform reports that World Environment Day is celebrated globally every 5 June to increase awareness and rapid action on critical environmental issues.

The attention of this year on plastic pollution reflects a growing concern for the impact of disposable plastics on ecosystems and human health.
