The richest person in Africa, Aliko Dangote, has retired from the Dangote Sugar Refinery Council (DSR).
The billionaire businessman has served as Chairman of the DSR Council for the past 20 years and helped shape the company’s growth.
DSR announced retirement of dangote in the disclosure of the company dated June 11, 2025, submitted to the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) by the Corporate Secretary/Legal Advisor, Temitope Hassan.
He confirmed that Dangote’s and two non-executive director retirers were effective on June 16.
Dangote Sugar Refinery’s Founder Director, Dangote has played an important role in the company’s expansion, ensuring stable shareholder value, strengthening the corporate governance framework, and navigating the development of the main industry.
The company recognizes its extraordinary contribution, stating, “In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery PLC hereby announced the retirement of our honorable chairman from the Board of Directors of the Company, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), Effective June 16, 2025.

“During his term of office, the company executed a large backward integration project in the states of Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa, which aims to strengthen its supply chain and increase domestic sugar production.
“He also plays an important role in forming company strategies and culture, thereby building a strong foundation for growth and fortune.
“After the comprehensive selection and transition process, the Dangote Sugar Refinery PLC council has appointed Arnold Ekpe, a non-executive independent director, as the new chairman of the company, effective June 16, 2025.
“Ekpe, a famous banking executive, brought broad leadership experience for that role, having previously held a senior position in the financial sector and other major industries.
“His deep understanding of corporate governance, strategic vision, and commitment to the value of stakeholders positioned it strongly to lead the company to the next growth phase.”
