Tinubu gives the national honor to Col. Abubakar Urar, apologizes for omission

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu awarded the national honor of the commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (cf.) on Colonel Abubakar Daniwa Umar (RETD), an important supporter of democracy and the key figure in the pro-democracy movement of 12 June.

The president announced the honor during his speech at the inauguration of a 300 beds specialized hospital and the professional training institute and skills development in Kaduna on Thursday.

Colonel Umar, often indicated as a “soldier of democracy”, was a vocal and courageous supporter of the year on 12 June 1993, the presidential elections, widely considered the most free and fair survey of Nigeria.

Despite his instrumental role in the defense of democratic ideals during a turbulent period in the history of Nigeria, his name was omitted from the list of honors announced during the recent celebrations of the day of democracy.

Recognizing supervision, President Tinubu has been publicly apologized for the omission and described the contributions of Colonel Umar to the nation as both historical and invaluable.

“It was an involuntary oversight. The constant support for the justice and democracy of Colonel Umar deserves the highest recognition. Today, we correct it by giving him the national honor of Cfr,” said Tinubu.

The announcement aroused applause from the dignitaries present at the event, which praised the gesture as a timely recognition of the inheritance and sacrifices of Colonel Umar.

The transfer adds a significant moment to the series of events in Kaduna, which also included the inauguration of the main infrastructures aimed at improving health care, professional education and public transport in the state.
