Man, 92 years old, imprisoned for murder in 1967

Tuesday a 92 -year -old man was said to have died in prison after being imprisoned for rape and a murder of 1967, in what is thought to be the oldest cold case of the United Kingdom.

Ryland Headley, who was sentenced for raising and killed Louisa Dunne, 75 years after entering the house almost 60 years ago, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum period of 20 years.

After spending the sentence of the Bristol Crown Court in the south -ovesto of England, judge Derek Sweeting said to Headley: “You will never be released, you will die in prison”.

He said that Headley, who was 34 years old at the time of crime, had “violated the holiness and security of the house of Mrs. Dunne where he had every right to feel safe.

“He must have experienced considerable pain and fear before his death.”

The judge mentioned the previous beliefs of Headley for raid in the homes of two elderly widows in 1977 and raised them.

Initially he was sentenced to life imprisonment for those sentences, which was subsequently reduced to seven years on appeal.

They showed “chilling behavior model”, added the judge.

The police reopened the case of Dunne in 2023 and combined the DNA from the victim’s skirt and other objects from the original probe to Headley.

Doughty Street Chamber, the legal team that represents Headley, said that it was the oldest murder of the cold case of Great Britain, a unsolved case for which new information emerges.

– Palm Print –
During the initial investigations, the police had found a left palm print from Dunne’s house, where she had been found dead for strangulation.

Palm printing was compared to 19,000 men without results at the moment.

At the time, Headley was a railway worker who lived just outside the area where men and boys were asked to print.

Reaching a dead end, the police scored forensic tests for half a century. Both DNA test and Headley’s Palma printing later led to correspondences.

When Headley was arrested at his house last November, he said to the investigators: “I don’t know what you are talking about. Very strange, very strange.”

“For 58 years, this frightening crime has remained unsolved and Ryland Headley, the man we now know is responsible, has avoided justice,” said Charlotte Ream of Crown Prosecution Service.

Dunne Mary Dainton’s grandson told the Court that the murder had a “large -scale effect” on her family.

“I feel that it falls to me for people who are no longer here,” he said.

Previously, Dainton said: “I was only 20 years old when my grandmother died and now I am almost the same age as when she was killed”.

The police said they were examining other possible cold cases that Headley could be connected.

“Ryland Headley has now been sentenced for three rapes of elderly women within their addresses and, in the case of Louisa Dunne, also her murder,” said Dave Marchant, Avon and Somerset police, Monday.

“I think there is any possibility that there are other crimes out there- in the 1960s, 70s, although a long period of time- for which Mr. Headley could be guilty.”
