“He protects workers, ordinary people”

The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) has declared a deep sadness over the death of the former President of Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a leader who evolved as a protector of workers and an advocate for ordinary people during his civilian government.

In a sincere condolences personally signed by the President of the NLC, Friend Joe Ajaero, and released on Monday in Abuja, Union recognizes the inheritance of the Buhari complex, highlights significant changes in his approach to labor issues between time as military rulers and as democratic president.

“For us in trade unions, Buhari came against trade unions and workers who hacked en masse, which led to an unintected suffering during his term of office as the head of the country’s military,” Recited Ajuero.

“However, as a civil president, Buhari saw it, that no workers were dismissed (not even during the Covid-19). He repeatedly provided facilities to the state government to clean up salary and retirement deposits and allowed them to regularly pay salaries (although some governors believed this trust),” he added.

Ajaero noted that although Buhari made a difficult economic decision such as increasing the price of petroleum products, he deliberately rejected the pressure to privatize the national refinery or aggressively devalue the nira, which could worsen the conditions for the average Nigerians.

“Although Buhari increases the price of petroleum products, he strongly refused to sell refineries or demonstrate Naira,” Ajaero said. “Buhari is consistently identified by workers’ problems/values including opposing pressure to adopt the fundamentalist market policy as part of the process of protecting workers and ordinary people.”

He further praised the deceased of the President for recognizing and correcting errors the previous step about childbirth.

“Therefore, at the end of the President, we have lost a leader who corrected his mistakes to workers, during his second arrival. He stood with people and countries, a leader who really prioritized the country first,” he said.

The President of the NLC said the organization was “very sad” by the former president who died and gave a condolence to his widow, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, the entire Buhari family, and all Nigerians mourned over their loss.

Ajaero prayed for God’s grace for the spirit of Buhari and asked that he be given a peaceful rest.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday at a hospital in London after a short illness. His death was officially announced by his family through a statement issued by his former spokesman, Garba Shehu Mallam.

The President of the Tinubu Soccer then stated that the national mourning period, with the flag was ordered to fly in half staff for seven days, and sent Vice President Kashim Shettima to England to accompany Buhari’s body at home.

Buhari served as Head of Nigerian State from 1983 to 1985 and as a democratic elected president from 2015 to 2023.
