The president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) described the previous performances of the Nigerian team athletes in the Commonwealth Games as a pride for the nation.

“They have demonstrated their skill in international events and have brought pride to the country. Since our inaugural participation in the Commonwealth Games in 1950, our national profile in this four -year event has shown remarkable progress.

“From ensuring a solitary silver medal in the 1950 Auckland games, to an impressive 12 gold medals count, 9 silver and 14 bronze in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth games, Nigerian athletes have done well.” Gumel, who is also the president of the Commonwealth Nigeria games, he said.

In an attempt to help Nigeria’s athletes improve their latest record established in the last games of the Commonwealth, Gumel also requested the continuous support of the federal government, especially with regard to the timely release of funds to facilitate the preparation of the team for the games.

Just two weeks ago, President Bola Tinubu had promised to unite the country through several sports activities while receiving the King’s cane before the Commonwealth 2026 games that were held between July 23 and July 2, 2026 in Glasgow Scotland.

The president, represented by the Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume said the current administration was committed to unite Nigeria through sports.

“We reiterate our dedication to the promotion of peace through sport. The arrival of the King’s cane in Nigeria on June 27 is a testimony of our commitment to the Commonwealth family and the ideals it represents.

“The arrival of the King’s cane is more than a relay. It is an opportunity to show our rich cultural heritage, vibrant diversity and unlimited potential.

“It allows us to reiterate our dedication to peace, understanding our sustainable development through the unifying power of sports.

“We recognize the symbolism of this cane, like the Olympic torch, light a collective passion and shared the anticipation and renewed determination while we wait for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth games.

“Our athletes have constantly demonstrated their skill on the global stage and have brought glory and honor to our country. Nigeria has continued to shine since our first participation in 1950, and we are determined to build on these successes,” he said.

It was a record excursion for the Nigeria team at the Commonwealth 2022 (CWG) games in Birmingham.

The medals were dragged into an exceptional race, while the Nigerian athletes broke several records in the competition. The Nigeria team won 12 gold medals in the competition: the country’s highest in the history of the CWG
