President Tinubu speaks to the NEC meeting in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has accused the governors elected on the all progressive (APC) congress platform of focusing more on the basic commitment to meet the expectations of the Nigerians.

Tinubu made the call to the meeting of the Executive National APC (NEC) Committee in Abuja on Thursday 24 July 2025.

The president underlined the need for an increase in community involvement and greater reactivity to citizens’ concerns.

He said: “The Nigerians still complain at the base.

“For you, governors, you have to wet the grass more and offer a progressive change to the Nigerians. God can bless our democracy and give us more fertile lands.

“To those who work with me to reach food sovereignty for our country, we will continue to work hard for you, the Nigerians and to listen to everyone to achieve national objectives”.

Tinubu reiterated the inclusive posture of the APC and said that the party remains open to new members and new ideas.

He described the opposition as “a coalition of confusion” and urged the Nigerians with progressive mentality to join the APC and participate in his development agenda.

“Our doors are still open and we should embrace those who join us with all our hearts,” said Tinubu.

Speaking also with the governors, Tinubu urged them to work collectively to leave a lasting legacy, including the construction of a party secretariat in Abuja.

Tinubu added: “We should leave a development inheritance. Governors are here – 23 to help identify a land, together with the minister of the territory of the federal capital.

“We should establish a committee of progressive governors to identify suitable land and build the secretariat”.

Tinubu recognized the economic challenges but said that progress was carried out under his administration.

He quoted the record of N14.9 trillion of revenue collected by the Federal Inland Revenue Service in the first six months of the year, with an increase of 43 % compared to the amount collected in 2024.

“It is not easy to navigate in the stormy waters of economic instability. Now, the economy is stabilized – There is no fear for the country, except for the continuous movement towards the upper and supported growth. I can assure you,” he said.

As for security, the president noticed that significant efforts have been made to restore security throughout Nigeria.

“Thousands of terrorists and bandits have been neutralized. You can see that fear is decreasing. However, we must remain vigilant and take the matter seriously. We must invest more in our people, be accommodating and remain committed to guaranteeing national security.”

The president welcomed the new competitors in the APC, including the Umbre Governor Eno of the state of Akwa Ibom, the sheriff of the governor Oborevwori of the state of the delta and other key political figures.

The meeting observed a minute silence in honor of the former president Muhammadu Buhari.

At the request of the President, the meeting also observed a minute of silence in honor of Aminu Dantata and Oba Sikiru adetona (The Awujale of ijebuland), which both recently died.
