Cemeso condemns the arrest of FM – Thage Baddlegges

The Center for Media and Society (Cemeso) condemned the arbitrary arrest of FM badgers by the Governor of the State of the Niger, stating that it is a clear deployment of the executive power that violates the state of law and the rights of the media chamber and a journalist.

The Governor of the State of the Niger, Mohammed Umaru Bago, had the week, gave a directive that FM badgers, a radio station based in Minna, was closed, citing public incitements.

He directed the Commissioner for National Security and the police commissioner under block and key while a license had to be revoked, the owner profiled and the premises marked with demolition.

The executive director of Cemeso, dr. Akin Akingbulu, said that the arbitrary closure of FM Badage of the Governor Bago is a dangerous move that violates the rights of the media chamber and a guaranteed journalist pursuant to the Constitution.

“The action of the Governor Umaru Bago must be given the adequate description: a brazen abuse of executive power and aggression to the rule of law by a owner of the political office who has undertaken to support the provisions of the establishment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He must understand that his action against FM badgeggios is an addition to the growing list of attacks on the press in the state of the Niger under his administration and questioned his credentials as a believer and respectful of the independent and free operation of the institutions in a democracy.

Dr. Akingbulu asked why the governor refused to direct his concerns to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the statutory regulator responsible for the transmission, which has established a presence throughout the country, including the state of the Niger.

According to Akingbulu, “the cause of the strengthening of democracy will be well served when the owners of political offices recognize and respect the existence and the roles of state and non -state institutions under an atmosphere of the rule of law”.

He said Cemeso joined other independent voices in asking:

Immediate inversion of the arrest order and withdrawal of the revocation of licenses and demolition threats by the Governor Bago.

A commitment to respect the freedom of the press and the right trial: the future grievances of the owners of political offices, including the governor Bago, must be channeled to the NBC, as requested by the law.

A publicly visible response from the NBC, articulating his intervention on the subject, in support of his obligation pursuant to the law of the NBC: “guarantee and guarantee the freedom and protection of the transmission industry”.
