Libyan authority captures 18 Nigerian migrants

Libyan authorities have announced the arrest and transfer of 18 Nigerian migrants who did not document from the Sirtre Immigration Detention Center to the southern city of Sabha, where they were expected to be repatriated to the country.

This was expressed in a statement by Migrant Rescue Watch (MRW), a group of humanitarian monitoring on its X -grip on Tuesday.

According to MRW, Nigeria’s transfer took place on Monday under the supervision of the Libyan Department to combat illegal migration (DCIM).

In the statement, the group said the migrants were transported by road in a convoy controlled by security, marked a part of a broader Libya strategy to facilitate the return of foreign citizens without legal status.

“Libya remains a big departure point for migrants who want to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, even though years have instability and conflict,” MRW said.

“The country’s detention center often has a large number of non -document migrants while waiting for deportation or repatriation.

“In recent years, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has partnered with the Libyan authority to regulate voluntary repatriation flights, offering migrants of choice to return to their home country,” he added.
