The former president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INC), Prof. Atthiru Jega, has raised new concerns about the democratic stability of Nigeria, warning that poor and selfish leadership is constantly undermining national progress.

Jega, who spoke as the main speaker at the third national hybrid annual conference of the Department of Political Sciences, Gusau Federal University, a state of Zamfara, said that the absence of leaders and visionary leaders left the country trapped in the underdevelopment and frustration cycles of citizens.

According to him, leadership, democracy and national development are inseparable pillars of the progress of a nation, but the class in power of Nigeria has armed public offices for personal gain.

“Without responsible and visionary leadership, democracy cannot thrive; without democratic principles, the risks of leadership are transformed into self -acting,” Jega warned.

He stressed that when leadership and democracy work in harmony, they stimulate socio-economic development. But in conflict, he observed, they open the doors to authoritarian inversions and derail the aspirations of citizens.

The former head of Incen has complained that many Nigerian leaders give priority to accumulate wealth instead of serving the people.

He urged the political elite to embrace responsibility and altruism, insisting on the fact that “democracy must concern the service, not the self-aricach”.

The conference, the theme “Leadership, Democracy and National Development of Nigeria”, has attracted the best politicians, academics and traditional sovereigns.

The Governor of the State of Zamfara, Dauda Lawal, represented by his commissioner for education, Malam Wadateau Madawaki, said that the gathering offered politicians a platform to rethink the governance and face the decay of leadership.

The Emir of Kaura Namoda, Hrh Major (Dr) Mohammed Ahmad Asha (RTD) and Fugus Deputy Chancellor, Prof. Mu’azu Abubakar Gusau (represented), greeted the conference for his relevance in a moment of profound social and security challenges.

Dr. Aminu Idris, head of the Political Science Department and supports the event, described the forum as “transformative”, praising the state government for its support.

The president of the local organizing committee, companion Abdulrahman Adamu, however, denounced the monetization of Nigerian politics, saying that it continues to deny national opportunities for competent and solid leadership.

He stressed: “Until the money does not stop dictating whoever reaches, Nigeria will remain in the taking of corrupt and incompetent sovereigns”.
