FG declares Wednesday public holiday for the 65th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence

The Federal Government declared on Wednesday 1 October 2025, a public holiday to score the 65th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.

The Minister of the Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced it in a declaration signed by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Monday.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated the Nigerians at home and in the diaspora for what he described as a “historical milestone” in the democratic journey of the nation, urging citizens to remain stopped in patriotism, unity and resilience.

He said: “Since 1960, the spirit of unity and resilience has kept us together as an indivisible nation. I urge all the Nigerians to continue to support these values ​​while we work towards a stronger and prosperous country”.

The minister also invited the Nigerians to support their trust in the agenda of the renewed hope of President Bola Tinubu, who according to him is anchored to national rebirth, economic growth and collective prosperity.

According to him, with the collective effort and citizens’ cooperation, Nigeria will continue to advance in peace, progress and development.

“I wish all the Nigerians a happy and memorable celebration of the 65th day of independence,” added Tunji-Ojo.

Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain on October 1, 1960 and has since marked the day with national celebrations, reflection and requires units. The commemoration of this year comes at a time when the country has to face economic challenges, security problems and renewed debates on the governance reforms.
