The president of the presidential committee for tax policy and tax reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, revealed that commercial prostitutes, popularly called “Runs Girls”, will have to pay taxes pursuant to the new tax framework of Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu had signed four tax reform invoices approved by the National Assembly after consultations with the interested parties on 26 June. The new laws – The Nigeria Tax Act, 2025 (NTA); the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025 (NTAA); The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025 (NRSEA); And the law on joint revenues (factory), 2025 (Jrbea) – should revisit the country’s tax and revenue system.
Speaking in an engagement session at the Redentate Christian Church of God, City of David Parish in Lagos, Oyedele said that the new Act of the tax administration does not distinguish between sources of moral or immoral income. According to him, any money earned through the supply of a service is taxable.
“If someone is doing girls, they go looking for men to sleep with. You know it’s a service. They will pay taxes on it,” he said.
He clarified that taxation will not apply to gifts or transactions that do not exchange, but only to income earned by the services rendered.
“If you provide a service and you are paid, whether people consider it well or bad, that income is taxable. What is not taxable are gifts – money that has been given to you without expecting anything in return,” he explained.
Oyedele’s observations have aroused conflicting reactions among the Nigerians.
While some argue that the taxation of sex workers is equivalent to legitimizing prostitution, others see it as a bold step to guarantee the equity of taxation.
The New Tax Administration Act tries to expand the revenue of Nigeria by bringing more players in the informal sector to the tax network.
It also establishes a uniform legal and operational framework for the tax administration in all federal, state and local governments.
