Professor Yakubu delivers to Mrs. Agbamuche as president of the Incen acting

Professor Mahmood Yakubu handed over to May Agbamuche -mbi as Interim National President of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INC).

Agbamuche -mbi is the oldest national commissioner in the electoral body.

Professor Yakubu announced him Tuesday during the current meeting with the electoral commissioners residing at the Inc headquarters in Abuja.

He urged the support of the commissioners and directors of the Commission for Agbamuche -mbi, until the appointment of a substantial president.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu is leaving the assignment as President of Inc, having completed his mandate of two terms of 10 years.

The president Tinubu is expected to appoint his successor soon, subject to a confirmation of the Senate.

Yakubu was appointed for the first time the president of the Inc by the former president Muhammadu Buhari to supervise the activities of the electoral referee in November 2015, six months after taking the office as president.

He completed his first term in office as President of the Electoral Corps in 2020, and was renamed for a second term by President Buhari.

The renunciation of Yakubu by President Buhari made him the first person to serve as an Incen president for two terms.

He took the place of Professor Atthiru Jega, with Iner who led many elections, including the general elections of 2019 and 2023.

● Appointment of successor

With Yakubu who completed his mandate at the helm of Insc affairs, the Nigerians, together with the organizations of civil society, can’t wait to see who succeeds him.

At any time, President Tinubu should appoint a substantial successor of Yakubu and civil society groups are already asking transparency in the process.

Last month, the socio-economic project for rights and responsibility (Serap) urged President Bola Tinubu to “urgently spread the details of the selection process and appoint for the successor of Professor Mahmood Yakubu”.

Serap urged the president to “disseminate the number and the names of the candidates for the president of the Inc and if the Council of State was consulted or would have been consulted in taking the appointment, as constitutionally requested.”

The group declared him in a letter from his deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, a copy obtained from the television of the channels.

According to the letter of September 27, the group asked Tinubu to “take advantage of the opportunity of the appointment of a new president of Inc to reconsider the appointment of at least three alleged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a resident electoral commissioners (REC) of the inac and to appoint the non -members of a political party as a replacement.”

“The process of selection and appointment for the replacement of Yakubu cannot and should not be” a closed shop “. A transparent and responsible process would need legitimate public interests”, the letter recited in part.

Also commenting on the appointment of a new Incen president, the executive director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Ito, said Nigeria needs an individual with a stainless character as national president of the electoral body.

Itodo said that anyone who is successful Yakubu, should not have any political affiliation and be courageous in doing the legitimate thing, it doesn’t matter who is known.

The leader of Yiaga Africa spoke when it appeared today as a guest on the television policy of the channels on Wednesday 24 September 2025.

He also observed that the remarkable reforms recorded by Incen had been dampened by the electoral fraud. [Channels TV]
