Armed men suspected of being kidnappers had, in separate attacks, abducted over thirteen traders and travellers.

Two people died in the attacks which occurred between Wednesday and Thursday

Eyewitnesses have revealed that on Wednesday, some kidnappers invaded Okabo community in Ofu Local Government of Kogi State, one person was shot dead and another person and a minor were abducted.

“There was a kidnapping in Egabada community in Igalamela/Odolu Local Government of Kogi State early Thursday morning where traders from Kogi East heading to Obolo-Affor Market in Enugu State were intercepted and the occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, conductor and a woman were held captive and taken to the forest.

Other groups of armed men invaded federal highways and mounted blockade between Ogbakpedo and Okabo along the Itobe-Anyigba road. The gunmen intercepted two commercial vehicles and evacuated all occupants, including two pregnant women, and chased them into the bush.

While taking the victims into the bush, the kidnappers spotted the two pregnant women and freed them. But the kidnappers took out eight victims.

The management of the Kogi East Neighborhood Watch (KENW) has expressed concern over these incessant cases of kidnapping in the last two consecutive weeks. “We have had cases of kidnapping almost every day. We are fed up. We need reinforcements to clear the forest and free the victims. We can only do this with the support of the state government.”

But the Kogi state police command could not be reached for confirmation of the attacks. Police Public Relations Officer ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat could not be reached by telephone.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area in Kogi, Tosin Olokun, has imposed an indefinite dusk to dawn curfew among communities in the area, amid growing security concerns such as kidnappings and other criminal activities.
