PDP governor urges calm ahead of Court of Appeal ruling on leadership crisis

The People’s Democratic Party Governors’ Forum on Sunday called for calm ahead of the Court of Appeal’s decision on the party’s leadership crisis.

The appeals court will deliver its ruling on the matter later Monday.

The governors made this call in a statement issued by the Director General of the Forum, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo in Abuja.

β€œWe urge our members, supporters and all Nigerians to remain calm and disciplined in their reaction to the decision.

β€œOur collective response must reflect maturity and deep respect for the rule of law.

“We call on all party members and leaders to exercise maximum restraint, calm and obey the law before, during and after the verdict,” the statement said.

The governors said that party leaders would meet soon to review the decision and map out the necessary actions following the decision.

They said whatever the decision, the PDP reiterated its respect for the judicial process and its commitment to peace.

They expressed the party’s confidence in the judicial system, which they described as a guardian of justice, which has an important role in ensuring justice, impartiality and maintaining national stability.

β€œAs we approach the 2027 elections, the PDP remains steadfast in its mission to provide a strong, credible and Nigerian people-centric alternative.

β€œNo decision can erase the desire of the Nigerian people to have a fair and competitive political system.

β€œWe are ready to fully participate in the democratic process, ensuring that the people’s voice is heard and respected.

β€œThe judiciary has always been the only impartial and people-oriented government institution whose tireless defense of the constitution has guaranteed the stability of our democratic government,” the statement added.

The governors noted that the PDP has always been the cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

An appeals court had on February 13 overturned decisions in nine appeals filed by rival factions of the PDP regarding the controversial national convention to be held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025.

The appeal stems primarily from separate decisions handed down by two judges of the Federal High Court in Abuja – James Omotosho and Peter Lifu.

There have also been counter decisions from the Oyo State High Court and more recently the Federal High Court, both in Ibadan, regarding the disputed convention.
