Kano government sacks service chiefs, appoints replacements

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, immediately sacked the state’s Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa.

The decision was revealed in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the move is part of the government’s broader efforts to reform and strengthen the country’s civil service system to ensure greater efficiency and accountability.

“This decision is part of the current administration’s ongoing efforts to reposition civil servants to make them more efficient, disciplined and improve service delivery across all government agencies.”

Despite being removed, the Governor expressed his appreciation to the outgoing Head of Service for his service and commitment to the state during his time in office.

“We wish him the best in his future endeavors and pray for his continued success in all aspects of life,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.

To ensure the continuity of the administration of the civil service, Yusuf appointed Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, Permanent Secretary for Administration and Public Services in the Cabinet Office, to carry out the role pending the appointment of a substantive Head of Service.

“The Governor has directed that Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, Permanent Secretary, Administration and Public Services in the Cabinet Office, should serve in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive Head of Service.”

The Governor also instructed Musa to officially delegate the responsibilities of the office to the Acting Head of Service no later than Wednesday, March 11 2026.

This development comes amidst changing political dynamics in Kano following Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigerian People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress.

This political move has reportedly triggered adjustments in the country’s political and administrative structure, as the government aligns its leadership and policy direction with the new party configuration while carrying out reforms in the civil service sector.
